Sigma Theta Psi was founded on November 13, 1991 at San Jose State University by eighteen unique women seeking to bring together women from all walks of life. These eighteen women--our Founding Mothers--were determined to create a diverse sisterhood that would embody their shared values of honesty, loyalty, open-mindedness, leadership, respect, and academic excellence. Since its founding, Sigma Theta Psi has continued to share and immortalize these values in every aspect of its sisterhood, thus making us stand out above all others.
Since the sorority's establishment, we have made it a point to follow in our founders' footsteps and incorporate the spirit of multiculturalism and sense of community into not just our sisterhood, but in our daily lives. As Sigmas, we value the bond of sisterhood, becoming leaders on our campus, volunteering in community projects, and advocating breast cancer awareness. Sigma Theta Psi has grown and flourished as an organization of women who strive to carry on the vision of the eighteen founding mothers.
